Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge: Rockfaces, Cols, and 360 Views

Less than two months into my 46er challenge, I tackled peaks 7 and 8: Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge via the Roaring Brook Trail. Most hikes start with a short flat section, but this one went straight into a climb, giving me an idea of what to expect for the day. Luckily, within 25 minutes, I was at rewarded with a view of Roaring Brook Falls.

The trail is mostly open rock, with few flat sections - up and down the whole way. I hiked to Giant first at a steady pace. Rocky Peak Ridge was much tougher than its 2 km distance suggests. You reach it via a col, climbing down and up, only to repeat it on the return. The 360-degree views from the summit are some of the best I’ve seen, with clear sights of many of the High Peaks ranges.

Both mountains live up to their names. Giant, originally “Giant of the Valley”, is the 12th highest peak in New York state, towering over Keene Valley. Rocky Peak Ridge got its name from a forest fire over 100 years ago that burned off the topsoil, leaving a bare ridge.

A knee injury slowed me down on the last 5 km, adding about two hours to an already long day. I’ll likely need a bit of rest before taking on my next peaks.
